Award-winning author shared her works with Hamilton students

An inside look at the works of a highly acclaimed author was shared to the students at the Hamilton Primary School.

The Hamilton Primary School community welcomed award-winning author Candace Fleming on Monday, March 25.

Meridith Bazilus, the Hamilton Media Specialist, coordinated this visit with the help of the school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

Ms. Fleming is the author of more than 20 books—fiction and non-fiction—and has achieved awards for her biographies, picture books, middle-grade novels, and teen novels for young readers.

According to Ms. Bazilus, students gathered by grade level in the Hamilton gym to hear Ms. Fleming explain how her books begin as story seeds that are often collected from her own experiences.

“She discussed her writing process and gave a behind-the-scenes look at the drafts of some of her most popular books,” Ms. Bazilus said. “The afternoon Kindergarten class was treated to an in-class read-aloud.”

Ms. Bazilus was impressed with Ms. Fleming's approach.

“Ms. Fleming's gift for storytelling and enthusiasm for writing left both students and staff members feeling inspired to start collecting their own story seeds,” Ms. Bazilus said.

Mrs. Bazilus added:

“Thanks to the Hamilton PTA for their generous sponsorship.”
